Chapter 9 Discussion Question 2

I am going to use President Obama as my well known speaker. I think the new President of the United States is a very eloquent speaker which makes him really stand out. I did not find President Bush to be a good speaker. He seemed to make up his own words and did not come off as polished when he spoke. President Obama’s strongest characteristics as a speaker are his ability to communicate a message in a clear and precise manor. He comes off as well educated and versed in his speaking. He also makes a tremendous amount of sense which I found our past President did not. I think it is credibility, attractiveness and power as a package that make him come off as such an all around good speaker. I am not sure if I would be giving him such praise if I didn’t feel so poorly towards our last President. But our last President has sure made our new President shine like a gem. I actually think he is building ethos in the above three area’s because we see him as a father, husband, leader, and overall someone we can trust to reshape our future in a positive way. The American people have put a lot of trust in him and I think it is because of his ethos that we expect so much back in return.

  1. Our new president is a great speaker in all three ways. Starting with credibility, Barack Obama is a peoples person that seems to be reaching out to us all the right way, like we hired him for a CEO position and he needs to be honest to us all. Yes, his family is a great family so that tells alot about who he is and what morals he stands for. He recently grow in power becoming the most powerful man in the world being the U.S. president so attention is given through that manner. Barack is a decent looking guy who keeps in shape a fair amount (more if he quits smoking). His speeking stands far beyond president Bush´s had because of all these strengthsand i think he will build on all three if he stays the way he has been the past couple of years we have gotten to know him.

  2. it's interesting how many students chose president obama in response to this question. i think it is interesting to compare and contrast the communication style of the current president with former president bush. while every american has a different way of gauging the overall intellectualism of any given president, i think the "anti-intellectualism" pervasive among conservative republicans is a direct response to the perceived hyper intellectualism of liberals who they argue do not speak to the average american. former president bush's communication style conveyed not a "simple folk" persona, but someone who lacked the smarts and know-how to lead this country. and this perspective resonated internationally. i think it's great to have someone lead whose words engender as sense of confidence.
